CELT (Centre for English Language Teaching)

CELT (The Centre for English Language Teaching) is a specialised unit within the University which provides English language teaching and support for registered international students studying on all four campuses of the University.

CELT currently offers a Foundation Diploma in English for Academic Purposes (Chinese Translation PDF) - Download PDF.The programme is offered at the Magee campus, two Pre-sessional Programmes in July – September: Pre-sessional PLUS (IELTS 5.0) and standard Pre-sessional (IELTS 5.5 – 6.0)at the Jordanstown campus and in-sessional modules in Semesters I and II at all campuses (Belfast, Coleraine, Jordanstown and Magee)

CELT also offers a Transitional Study Skills and Cultural Orientation Module. This module is an essential element of the study agreement that Ulster has with specific partner universities. The students hold unconditional offers to full-time degree courses at the University of Ulster and this enhancement module, integrated within the partner framework, aims to introduce students to a range of academic skills to equip them for studying at Ulster and provide them with the confidence to adapt to a new learning environment. It also helps students develop greater cultural fluency and intercultural skills.
Assessment is through coursework and each student will receive a report detailing suggestion for further improvement.

CELT has held British Council accreditation for the past ten years, thus ensuring that the teaching is of a high calibre and meets agreed quality standards.

CELT also collaborates with schools and faculties within the University on curriculum development and monitoring of English language training programmes at collaborating institutions overseas.

CELT is able to call on a register of highly-qualified and experienced teachers to help them out at peak times.

The permanent CELT Teaching Fellows are very friendly and approachable.  They all have substantial experience of work overseas, including Europe, the Middle East and the Far East, and their work at the University brings them into contact with students from all over the world.  Many of these students stay in touch with the staff when they leave Northern Ireland and keep us up-to-date, and we are always glad to hear their news.

We look forward to seeing you at the University of Ulster.
